I had forgotten how much the use of inlay resembled musical notes to me… the receptiveness of the clay to thin slabs of colour being pressed through the surface. Working on a commission recently with the request I make use of my more ragged edges and spontaneous use of line with inlay, reminded me how much this approach to my work appeals to me. I think I’ll see how it might work by interpreting some of the ceilings of the grand buildings in Rome in the tiles I want to use for our final exhibit.
